1. Muncaster Castle: This ancient fortress near Ravenglass dates back to the 13th century and is reputed to be one of Britain’s most haunted castles. Its ghostly residents include Tom Fool, a mischievous jester whose spirit is said to linger, delighting in minor pranks on staff and visitors. Guests have also reported strange sounds, cold spots, and even glimpses of ghostly figures. The Tapestry Room is especially notorious, with visitors claiming to feel “watched” by unseen eyes.
2. Wray Castle: Overlooking Lake Windermere, Wray Castle is another historic hotspot for the supernatural. Built in 1840, the Gothic revival castle carries whispers of unexplained footsteps, cold drafts, and flickering lights. 3. Claife Viewing Station: Perched along the shores of Windermere, Claife Viewing Station is enveloped in folklore and ghostly tales. The ruin once hosted wild, raucous parties, and legend has it that a monk, drawn by a fatal infatuation, haunts the area. Locals have reported sightings of a spectral figure cloaked in a monk’s habit, as well as strange lights flickering across the lake.
4. Carlisle Castle: Located just outside the Lake District, Carlisle Castle is notorious for its chilling tales of hauntings. Built by William II in 1092, this castle has a violent history, with several sieges and brutal imprisonments over the centuries. Legend has it that in the 1830s, the skeleton of a woman was found within the walls, which disturbed her ghost, as she charged at a soldier before 'melting into thin air'.
