EMERGENCY services are still in attendance following a devastating fire that affected several buildings in Gosforth.

A multi-agency inspection is scheduled for today following Cumbria Fire and Rescue's overnight presence at the site.

Following the inspection, it is hoped that Cumberland Council will reopen the road.

Gosforth Parish Council also issued an 'urgent appeal' for clothes and shoes to help those affected.

The village church had been set up as a donation centre following the blaze.

Cumbria Fire and Rescue Service's area manager, Lauren Woodward, expressed her gratitude to the emergency teams and the local community for their continued efforts throughout the past 24 hours.

"Crews worked tirelessly to tackle a well-developed fire in a commercial premise with domestic dwellings above and surrounding.

"Crews engaged with local residents to provide reassurance and worked to limit the disruption to the village. I would like to thank all those who responded and worked to contain and tackle the fire.

"I would also like to thank the local community who supported Cumbria Fire and Rescue Service with welfare provisions, and the employers and families of our on-call crews who were engaged in this incident for a number of hours," she said.
