A LITTER picking event has been taking place across Whitehaven.

A Talk and Tidy event, which has been organised by Cumberland Council, has been taking place around the town.

The council works with various organisations like Home Group and Castle & Coasts to help to tidy towns and villages across Cumberland.

Several of these litter picks have already taken place, much to the delight of residents in the area.

On Thursday, June 27, a team from Home Group was out on Peter Street helping to today the streets. Clare Matthews, housing manager at Home Group, said: "We're doing a Talk and Tidy event here today, and every month we focus on a different area.

"Home Group works alongside Cumbria Police, Cumberland Council, Cumbria Fire and Rescue, and other organisations to provide this voluntary service.

"There are around twelve of us who are scattered across different parts of the town centre.

"We're out and visible, so if any customers want to come and speak to us they can. We've been to places like Hensingham, Mirehouse, Parton, and Lowca in the past.

"Members of the public are encouraged to volunteer and get involved with the initiative."
