Coastguards were called out to a suspected ordnance on the beach on Sunday, April 28.
Whitehaven Coastguard Rescue Team said a member of the public saw a ‘concerning object’ on Drigg Beach and alerted them, giving the precise location using what3words.
When they got there, coastguards assessed the object and sent photos to the Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team for further evaluation.
Given it was above the high water line, the police were notified to oversee the scene until it was confirmed safe and it could be removed.
It’s not clear yet whether it was an explosive or not – the Ministry of Defence has been approached for a comment this morning (April 30).
